The Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) is a 2013 Japanese animated movie directed by Makoto Shinkai. The film follows the story of Takao Akizuki, a 15-year-old aspiring shoemaker who decides to skip school and spend his mornings sketching shoes in a quiet Japanese garden. One day, he meets an older woman named Yukino who seeks refuge from the rain under the same gazebo where Takao sketches.

Over time, Takao and Yukino develop a unique bond as they meet each other on rainy days and share intimate moments in the garden. They discuss their dreams, fears, and past experiences as they seek acceptance and companionship. However, their relationship is also complicated by their age and life experiences.

Takao dreams of becoming a shoemaker and feels that he does not fit in with his peers. Yukino, on the other hand, is struggling with her own personal issues and cannot seem to connect with those around her. Despite their differences, they find solace in each other's company and are able to open up in ways they could not with others.

As the rainy season comes to an end, Takao and Yukino must confront the reality of their situations and the challenges they face. The Garden of Words is a poignant and emotional tale of two people finding each other in unexpected ways and navigating the complexities of life and love.
