After transferring to a new school, Ana Rue becomes obsessed with Charlie Grimille, a former student who died during a play called "The Gallows". She participates in a viral internet challenge related to the play and soon starts experiencing strange occurrences. As she gets more involved with the play and investigates Charlie's death, she discovers that a malevolent spirit has attached itself to her. Ana enlists the help of her classmates to try and end the curse before it's too late. However, as they get closer to uncovering the truth, they realize that the spirit will do anything to stay alive, putting them all in danger.
