The Fourth Man is a Dutch psychological thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven. The main character is Gerard Reve, a writer who struggles with alcoholism and writer's block. During a lecture, he meets a beautiful young woman named Christine. They start a passionate affair, and Gerard becomes obsessed with her.

The visions then begin - intense and vivid nightmares that show Gerard events from the future. He sees himself and Christine on a train, where an accident occurs. These visions start to scare him because he believes that they are a forewarning of an impending disaster involving Christine. He becomes paranoid and increasingly erratic, which puts a strain on his relationship.

As his visions mount, Gerard begins to doubt if Christine is who she says she is. He discovers her relationship with Hermann, the organizer of his lecture, and believes that Hermann may be the fourth man in his visions. Gerard becomes even more anxious as he realizes that the pattern of the visions is repeating itself and there might be the fourth man in Christine's life.

As the movie builds to its gripping climax, Gerard is eventually faced with the question of whether his visions are a warning of the future or just a symptom of his alcoholism and paranoia? And if the former is true, then what is he willing to do to protect himself and Christine from an impending disaster that he knows is coming?
