The protagonist, named Jason Tripitikas, is portrayed by Michael Angarano. After discovering the Monkey King's staff in a pawn shop, he is teleported back in time to ancient China. There, he meets a drunken immortal named Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), who informs him that he is the chosen "Seeker" who has been foretold to free the Monkey King (Jet Li) from his imprisonment by the evil Jade Warlord (Collin Chou).
Lu Yan introduces Jason to Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei) and Silent Monk (Jet Li), two warriors who agree to accompany him on his quest. Their journey takes them through dangerous territories filled with treacherous foes, including the Jade Warlord's army of soldiers and the White-Haired Witch (Li Bingbing).
As they progress, Jason becomes stronger and starts to develop his fighting skills. He also discovers the importance of teamwork and becomes close to his new friends. Ultimately, they face the Jade Warlord and his army in a thrilling final battle that leads to the Monkey King's liberation.
