The Fisherman

Comedy  Ghana

The Fisherman follows the story of an old fisherman named Kweku who is struggling to make a living in a small coastal town in Ghana. One day, he catches a talking fish while out at sea. The fish claims to be the reincarnation of an ancient sea god and offers Kweku three wishes in exchange for its freedom.

Kweku is initially skeptical but eventually decides to make his wishes, hoping to improve his life and that of his family. However, his choices lead to unintended consequences and he soon realizes that maybe the talking fish wasn't such a good idea after all.

Alongside the main plot, the film also explores the societal and economic challenges facing Ghana as a developing country, including issues of poverty, corruption, and the impact of globalization. The characters navigate these challenges in their daily lives, offering a glimpse into the realities of life in West Africa.

The Fisherman features a predominantly Ghanaian cast and crew, with acclaimed director and writer, Aniedi Awah Noba, at the helm. It premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and has since screened at numerous international festivals. The film has been praised for its heartfelt performances, distinctive visual style, and blend of magical realism and social commentary.
