The First Purge is a prequel to the previous Purge films and explores the origins of the annual Purge event. Set in a dystopian America, the New Founding Fathers of America, a political party, conducts an experiment where they declare a 12-hour period of time for all crimes, including murder, to be legal in the Staten Island area. The experiment is carried out to test the theory that allowing people to release their criminal impulses for one night will reduce crime rates for the rest of the year.
The film follows the story of several characters, including drug kingpin Dmitri, anti-Purge activist Nya, and her younger brother Isaiah. While some residents choose to stay and sell their services to those who want to purge, others, such as Nya and Isaiah, decide to stay and protect their community from those who try to harm them.
As the night progresses, it becomes apparent that the experiment is not what it seems, and that the government has other ulterior motives behind the Purge. The experiment spirals out of control when mercenaries, hired by the government, enter the Staten Island area, making the Purge not only deadly but also political.
In the end, as the violence spills over beyond the trial-city borders, it becomes clear that the Purge experiment is far from over and that the New Founding Fathers of America have a much bigger plan in play. The movie ends with the anticipation of more Purges to come, setting the stage for the events of the previous Purge films.
