The taxi driver, Dallas (Bruce Willis), lives in a futuristic and chaotic New York City. He is reluctantly pulled into a mission to save the world when a beautiful and mysterious woman named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) literally falls into his cab. Leeloo is the Fifth Element, a being created to save the world from evil and destruction.
Leeloo must retrieve four ancient stones representing the classical elements of earth, water, wind, and fire, which along with Leeloo, make up the key to defeat the evil entity, known as the Great Evil, that threatens to destroy the world. Dallas and Leeloo are joined on their mission by a flamboyant radio host named Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker) and a priest named Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm).
As they journey across space to find the stones, they encounter numerous obstacles, including the space police and the Great Evil's henchman, Zorg (Gary Oldman). Zorg is a greedy businessman who wants the stones for himself, and is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his success.
In the end, Dallas and Leeloo are able to retrieve the stones and use them to defeat the Great Evil. However, Leeloo is severely injured in the process and Dallas sacrifices himself to revive her. In the final scene, Dallas is honored as a hero and Leeloo awakens to a new world, embracing the potential for new life.
