The Fall of the Roman Empire is an epic historical drama film released in 1964, directed by Anthony Mann and starring Sophia Loren, Christopher Plummer, Stephen Boyd, and Alec Guinness. The film portrays the events surrounding the end of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Dark Ages in Europe.

The story takes place in the 2nd century AD and revolves around the emperor Marcus Aurelius (Guinness), a wise and just leader who seeks to end the Roman Empire's expansion and establish a peaceful future for the empire. However, his plans for a successor are disrupted by his ambitious and ruthless son Commodus (Boyd), who is determined to seize power at any cost.

After Marcus Aurelius' death, Commodus becomes the emperor and begins a reign of terror and corruption. He alienates the Roman Senate and the people and surrounds himself with sycophants and gladiators. One of these gladiators is Livius (Plummer), a loyal general who serves under Marcus Aurelius and becomes a rival to Commodus for the love of the beautiful Lucilla (Loren), Commodus' sister.

As Commodus' tyranny intensifies, the Roman Empire is threatened by external enemies, including the Germanic tribes who are itching to invade and plunder Rome. Livius and his army must defend Rome against the invading barbarians and at the same time, confront and overthrow Commodus if they hope to save Rome from total collapse.

The Fall of the Roman Empire is notable for its lavish sets and costumes and its star-studded cast, which includes many legendary actors. The film features historical accuracy in its portrayal of the events, but takes some creative liberties to dramatize the narrative. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, the film has become a cult classic and is considered one of the greatest historical epics of all time.
