Louis Ives is a socially awkward and eccentric young man who becomes infatuated with the lifestyle of an older, more sophisticated writer named Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline), whom he meets through a personal ad for "The Extra Man" -- a term used to describe a male companion to wealthy older women.
Harrison, a relic of a bygone era and a walking encyclopedia of cultural curiosities, takes Louis under his wing, and the two embark on a series of misadventures that challenge Louis' perceptions of himself and the world around him.
As their friendship deepens, Louis becomes increasingly enamored with Harrison's glamorous and unconventional lifestyle, which includes hobnobbing with New York's elite at exclusive events and wearing flamboyant costumes in public. But as Louis tries to fit in with Harrison's eccentric circle of friends, he starts to question whether this is the life he truly wants for himself.
