Defying Geography: Unveiling the Unyielding Welsh Spirit

Drama,Comedy,Romance  United Kingdom

The movie is set in 1917 and follows the story of two British cartographers, Reginald Anson (played by Hugh Grant) and George Garrad (played by Ian McNeice), who are sent to Wales to measure the distance between two points. During their survey, they stumble upon the village of Ffynnon Garw, where they discover what they believe to be a mountain.

However, their measurements indicate that the feature is actually a hill, which measures just short of the required height to qualify as a mountain. When they inform the proud villagers of this fact, they are insulted and vow to make the hill higher.

The village comes together to build a cairn on the top of the hill, using soil and stones from the surrounding area. In the meantime, Anson and Garrad are forced to stay in the village and watch as their initial calculations are discredited.

As the cairn grows in size, tensions rise between the villagers and the English cartographers. However, as the project nears completion, Anson and Garrad begin to understand the importance of the hill to the community and decide to help them achieve their goal.

The climax of the film sees the villagers and cartographers working together to complete the cairn, which eventually surpasses the necessary height to be considered a mountain. The film ends with Anson and Garrad departing the village, leaving behind a newly-accredited mountain and a grateful community.
