The movie opens with the USS Haynes, a World War II American destroyer escort, patrolling the Atlantic while looking for German submarines. As they conduct a routine sweep, they detect a German U-Boat on their sonar. The captain of the vessel, Lieutenant Commander Murrell (played by Robert Mitchum), prepares his crew for battle and orders them to attack the U-Boat.
However, the German captain, Von Stolberg (played by Curt Jürgens), is a brilliant strategist who has fought numerous battles against the Allies. He quickly realizes that the American destroyer is pursuing him and decides to outmaneuver them by diving deep and hiding in the ocean currents. This creates a prolonged game of cat-and-mouse between the two vessels, as they each try to outmaneuver and outwit one another.
As the battle rages on, both captains come to respect each other's capabilities and skill. They communicate with each other over the radio, developing a mutual understanding and admiration for each other despite being on opposite sides of the war. Eventually, they decide to meet in person to negotiate a ceasefire and acknowledge each other's bravery.
The Enemy Below is a gripping, intense movie that explores the psychological and strategic challenges of naval warfare.
