The Empire Strikes Back picks up three years after the events of the first movie, A New Hope. The Rebel Alliance is still fighting against the Galactic Empire, and Luke Skywalker is now a commander in the alliance's ranks. He has been tasked with learning the ways of the Jedi from Yoda in order to become powerful enough to defeat Darth Vader and the Empire.
Meanwhile, the Empire has stepped up their pursuit of the rebels, and Darth Vader has become obsessed with capturing Luke Skywalker. He sets a trap for Luke on the planet of Hoth, leading to a battle in which the rebels are forced to flee. Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia escape on the Millennium Falcon, while Luke heads to Dagobah to continue his training with Yoda.
The rebels are pursued by the Empire across the galaxy, leading to various encounters that test their courage and loyalty. Han Solo is betrayed by Lando Calrissian, an old friend who has made a deal with the Empire. Princess Leia is captured by Darth Vader, who uses her to lure Luke into a trap on the Cloud City of Bespin.
The climax of the movie sees Luke confronting Darth Vader in a lightsaber battle that reveals a shocking truth about their relationship. The rebels are left scattered and defeated, setting up the final showdown between the good guys and the Empire in the next movie, Return of the Jedi.
