The Devil's Double is a 2011 biographical crime drama film directed by Lee Tamahori. It is based on the true story of Latif Yahia, an Iraqi army lieutenant who is forced to become the double of Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein's erratic and sadistic son.
The film begins in 1987, when Yahia, a soldier in the Iraq-Iran War, is summoned to meet Uday Hussein. Uday explains that he wants Yahia to become his double, as he fears for his life and believes that having a lookalike will protect him from assassination attempts. Yahia is initially reluctant, but he is eventually coerced into accepting the offer when Uday threatens to harm his family.
Over the course of the film, Yahia is immersed in the extravagant lifestyle of the Hussein family, which includes lavish parties, drugs, and sex. However, he also witnesses the brutal and sadistic nature of Uday, and is forced to carry out twisted orders on his behalf.
As Yahia struggles to maintain his sanity in an environment of constant danger and moral compromise, he begins to plan his escape. However, he soon realizes that leaving the Hussein family will not be as easy as he thought, and that he may need to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his survival.
The Devil's Double features a stellar performance by Dominic Cooper, who portrays both Yahia and Uday Hussein. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Cooper's performance but criticized the film's pacing and lack of depth in its depiction of the Iraq War and the Hussein regime.
