The Devil's Backbone is a 2001 Spanish-Mexican supernatural horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro. Set in Spain in 1939, during the last days of the Spanish Civil War, the film tells the story of Carlos, a young orphan who is taken to the Santa Lucía orphanage, run by kindly but conflicted Dr. Casares and his strict and bitter headmistress Carmen.

Carlos quickly befriends Jaime, a young boy who tells him about the orphanage's dark past and a ghostly presence they call "the one who sighs", a boy who died at the orphanage and whose ghost haunts the place. Carlos also meets the beautiful and mysterious Conchita, who works at the orphanage and seems to know more than she lets on.

As Carlos begins to uncover the secrets of the orphanage, he becomes caught up in a web of intrigue and violence that threatens to destroy him and everyone around him. Meanwhile, the ghostly presence grows stronger and more malevolent, intent on seeking revenge for its death.

Del Toro's signature blend of horror, fantasy and social commentary is on full display in The Devil's Backbone, which explores themes of war, loss, neglect, guilt and redemption, as well as the power of the supernatural. With its stunning visuals, superb cast, and haunting score, The Devil's Backbone is a haunting and unforgettable film that ranks among del Toro's best works.
