Science Fiction,Comedy,Family,Fantasy  United States of America

The Devil and Max Devlin is a 1981 American fantasy comedy film directed by Steven Hilliard Stern. The film stars Elliott Gould as Max Devlin, a sleazy talent agent who lives a life of debauchery until he dies in a car accident and goes to hell. There, he meets the devil Barney, played by Bill Cosby, who offers Max a chance to redeem himself and stay on Earth if he can convince three innocent people to sell their souls to him.

Max is given the power to possess the bodies of others and use them to carry out his mission. He first targets a teenage band called "The Hellcats," whose lead singer, Penny, is struggling to make ends meet. Max offers her a record deal in exchange for her soul, and Penny agrees, believing that Max can make her dreams come true.

Max's second target is a wealthy but unhappy housewife, Peggy, whose son Tobi is being neglected by his workaholic father. Tobi desperately wants a father figure and asks Max to marry his mother so he can be his stepfather. Max takes advantage of Peggy's vulnerability and convinces her to sell her soul in exchange for his proposal.

For his final target, Max chooses a kind-hearted but destitute street performer named "Sunny Day," who just wants to be able to afford food and shelter for herself and her friends. Max struggles to find a way to convince her to sell her soul, as Sunny is wise to his tricks and refuses to compromise her values.

As the deadline approaches, Max realizes the error of his ways and tries to find a way to outsmart Barney and save himself and his targets from damnation. In the end, Max sacrifices himself to save Peggy and Tobi and convinces Sunny to take his place and redeem herself in the eyes of heaven.

The Devil and Max Devlin received mixed reviews upon its release but has since become a cult classic. The film's cast also includes Susan Anspach, Adam Rich, and Julie Budd.
