After her son Ben disappears during her high school reunion, Beth Cappadora (Michelle Pfeiffer) becomes consumed by grief and guilt over losing him. Nine years later, the family has moved to a new town and seemingly moved on from the tragedy. However, during a chance encounter at a school sports event, Ben (Ryan Merriman) reappears in their lives, now going by the name Sam.
Beth is overjoyed to have her son back, but the reunion is bittersweet as Ben/Sam has no memory of his original family. He has been raised by a kindly man named George (Whoopi Goldberg), who found him wandering the streets as a young child and took him in. Beth and her husband Pat (Treat Williams) must navigate the complexities of rebuilding their relationship with their long-lost son, while also dealing with the emotional fallout from his disappearance.
As Ben/Sam adjusts to his new life with his biological family, tensions arise as he struggles to connect with his siblings and adjust to the expectations placed upon him.
