Former Marine Tim Kearney is serving a prison sentence for drug smuggling when he is offered a deal by DEA agent Tad Gruzsa. Kearney is asked to impersonate Bobby Z, a drug dealer who has recently been killed in a police raid, in exchange for his freedom. The plan is to use Kearney as leverage in a hostage swap with a notorious crime lord, Don Huertero, who is holding a DEA agent hostage.
However, when the swap goes wrong, Kearney is forced to flee with Z's young son, who was also part of the hostage exchange. Kearney and the boy go on the run, pursued by both Huertero's men and the DEA, who now want to bring Kearney back into custody.
