In the movie, Klaatu (played by Keanu Reeves) arrives on Earth in a large sphere with his robot, Gort. He is immediately taken into custody by the US government, but manages to escape and assumes the identity of a human scientist named Dr. Carpenter to blend in with society.
Klaatu tries to meet with world leaders at the United Nations to convince them to change their ways, but is denied access by the Secretary of Defense. Frustrated with humanity's lack of action, Klaatu decides to go ahead with his plan to exterminate the human race.
Meanwhile, Dr. Carpenter develops a bond with a woman named Helen Benson (played by Jennifer Connelly) and her son Jacob. He begins to have second thoughts about carrying out his mission and comes up with a solution to save the planet without destroying humanity.
In the dramatic finale, Klaatu confronts the Secretary of Defense and presents him with the option of saving the planet by changing their ways or facing destruction. In the end, humanity makes a last-minute effort to change their ways, and Klaatu and Gort depart from Earth with the hope that mankind can live up to their promises.
