In The Darkest Minds, the disease that killed 98% of America's children is called IAAN (Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration) and the surviving children eventually develop supernatural abilities, classified into five different categories by the government. The protagonist, Ruby Daly, is a 16-year-old Orange (ability to manipulate minds) who pretends to be a Green (ability to understand and control technology) to avoid being killed by the government.
Ruby meets Liam, a charismatic Blue (ability to move objects with the mind), Chubs, a cautious and smart Green, and Zu, a shy and kind-hearted Yellow (ability to manipulate electricity). They become friends and escape their internment camp, seeking refuge in the mysterious Slip Kid's Sanctuary for children like them who have escaped their camps.
Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including a dangerous group of government agents called the PSFs (Psi Special Forces) and a harmful virus that affects Ruby's powers. They also come across a group of adult Reds (ability to control fire) who want to use the children's powers for their own gains.
As they journey towards the sanctuary, Ruby and Liam develop feelings for each other while facing their own internal struggles. Ruby grapples with the guilt of accidentally erasing her parents' memories of her, while Liam mourns the loss of his family and struggles to believe that the government can be defeated.
Eventually, the group reaches the Slip Kid's Sanctuary and discover that it is a trap set up by the government to capture the children. Ruby and Liam are separated from the others and are taken to a research facility where they become pawns in a larger government plan. They must use their powers and teamwork to outsmart the government and rescue their friends before it's too late.
