The film starts with the Reynolds family, who are grieving the loss of their mother and wife. David, the father, decides to take his family on a trip to Colombia, where his wife was born and raised. The spirit is a churel, a demon believed to be created when a woman dies in childbirth or is scorned by a lover. The churel can jump from person to person, spreading its malevolent influence. As soon as it possesses Ana Maria, it starts to spread to other members of the family, causing them to behave erratically.
As the tension and paranoia rise, David discovers that the only way to stop the churel is to perform a ritual that will trap it inside a jar. But the process is complicated and dangerous, and the family must overcome their inner demons and work together to survive.
