The main character, John Shepherd, is a retired police officer who becomes a private investigator. He is approached by a wealthy diamond dealer named Malcom whose employee, a diamond cutter named Gigi, has gone missing. Malcom insists that Gigi is a crucial employee who handles all of his most precious stones and begs John to find her.
John begins his investigation by questioning Gigi's colleagues, but no one seems to have any information. He soon discovers that Gigi has ties to the Los Angeles mob and suspects that she may have been kidnapped or worse.
