In the third installment of The Conjuring series, which is based on a true story, Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate a murder case where the defendant, Arne Cheyenne Johnson, claims to have been possessed by a demon when he committed the crime. The Warrens discover that the possession began when Johnson's girlfriend's younger brother, David, was also reportedly possessed. The Warrens try to help David, but the possession becomes too strong, and he dies during an exorcism.
After the murder, Johnson is arrested and goes to trial. His lawyers attempt to use the demonic possession as a defense, which brings in the Warrens as expert witnesses. The movie shows the Warrens investigating various paranormal occurrences, including a cursed totem and a terrifying waterbed scene, in order to try and prove Johnson's alleged possession.
Along the way, the Warrens must confront their own personal demons and doubts about their faith. They seek the help of a retired priest, Kastner, who has experience with demonic entities, in order to stop the evil that has taken over David and Johnson.
In the end, the Warrens are able to defeat the demon and clear Johnson's name, although he still serves time in prison for the murder. The film concludes with footage of the real-life Warrens and Johnson, along with information about the precedent-setting nature of the trial.
