As Jimmy Rabbitte starts to put together his soul band, he faces a number of challenges. Many of the local musicians and singers he encounters are unreliable, and he struggles to find the right mix of talent to create a truly great band. However, he eventually recruits an eclectic group of musicians from the local community, including a drummer who is also a builder, a bass player who is also a bouncer, and a pianist who is also a part-time baker.
Despite some initial struggles, the band begins to come together and starts to play at local gigs. They quickly gain a following and are soon offered a recording contract. As they start to record their album, tensions rise between the band members. Deco, the lead singer and the band's main draw, becomes increasingly difficult to work with, and there are conflicts over musical direction and song selection.
Meanwhile, Jimmy must also contend with issues outside of the band. His parents are going through a difficult time, and he must balance his responsibilities to his family with his commitment to the band. He also falls in love with one of the backup singers, but the relationship becomes complicated when she becomes pregnant.
Despite these challenges, The Commitments continue to play and record, culminating in a triumphant performance at a local nightclub. However, soon after the show, the band falls apart, with members moving on to other projects or simply losing interest. As the film ends, Jimmy is left to reflect on the band's brief but memorable run, and to wonder what might have been if things had turned out differently.
