Mahree Bok is a white South African girl who lives on a farm with her family in the apartheid-era South Africa. She loves her country and is proud of her father's work as a police officer. Meanwhile, Piper Dellums is a black American girl who lives in a luxurious mansion in Washington DC with her parents, who are civil rights activists.
When the opportunity arises for Mahree to participate in a Cultural Exchange Program and spend a semester in the United States, she eagerly accepts. She is excited about the chance to experience a different culture and meet new people. However, when she arrives in Washington DC, she is shocked to find that her host family is black.
Piper and her family are equally surprised to learn that Mahree is not black, as they had assumed based on her country of origin. Piper, who has grown up in a world where racism is still prevalent, is initially hesitant to accept Mahree as her friend. Mahree, too, struggles to reconcile her beliefs about race with her newfound experiences.
As Mahree spends more time with Piper and her family, she begins to see the world from a different perspective. She learns about the struggles of the civil rights movement and starts to question her own beliefs about race. Similarly, Piper starts to see Mahree as an individual, rather than simply as a white South African.
Throughout the movie, both girls face challenges and misunderstandings as they navigate their different cultures and beliefs. However, they eventually overcome their differences and form a deep and lasting friendship. The Color of Friendship is a heartwarming story about the power of friendship and acceptance, even in the face of deep-seated prejudice and racism.
