The Clan of the Cave Bear takes place during prehistoric times and follows the journey of Ayla, a young girl from a different tribe who is taken in by the "Clan of the Cave Bear" after her family is killed in an earthquake. Despite opposition from some members of the clan, most notably Broud, the son of the clan leader, Iza, the medicine woman, takes Ayla under her wing and teaches her valuable skills such as hunting, gathering, and medicine.
As Ayla grows up, she struggles to fit in with the clan due to her different upbringing and physical appearance. She is taller and more agile than the others, which creates jealousy and resentment among some members of the clan. Broud, in particular, is hostile towards Ayla and is threatened by her intelligence, strength, and independent nature.
