The City of Lost Children is a 1995 French-German-Spanish science fiction fantasy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. The film is set in a surreal and dystopian world consisting of a group of islands called "The City", ruled by the evil scientist Krank (Daniel Emilfork) who is unable to dream, causing him to age rapidly. Krank's henchmen round up orphaned children as test subjects to steal their dreams, hoping to slow his aging process.
One of the kidnapped children is a young boy named Denree (Joseph Lucien), who is taken from his adopted older brother One (Ron Perlman), a former carnival strongman. One sets out to rescue Denree and teams up with a nightclub singer named Miette (Judith Vittet) who leads a gang of street children. Together, they navigate through the dark and twisted world of The City, avoiding the traps set by Krank and his gang of clones, and ultimately confront Krank in his lair at the top of a tower.
The City of Lost Children is known for its surreal and darkly imaginative visuals, as well as its themes of childhood innocence and the power of dreams.
