The Chaperone is a 2018 movie directed by Michael Engler and based on a novel by Laura Moriarty. The Kansas woman referred to in the synopsis is named Louise Brooks, played by Haley Lu Richardson. Louise is a talented young dancer who dreams of making it big in New York City. She convinces her mother to let her go to New York to audition for the Denishawn Dance Company.
Louise needs a chaperone to travel with her, and her mother chooses her older, more conservative neighbor, Norma Carlisle, played by Elizabeth McGovern. Norma has her own reasons for wanting to go to New York, including uncovering the truth about her birth mother who gave her up for adoption.
While in New York, Norma and Louise have very different journeys. Louise is focused on her dance auditions and making connections in the city's Bohemian scene. Norma becomes friends with a gay, Jewish chauffeur, Joe, played by Geza Rohrig, and attends a meeting with the feminist movement.
Throughout their adventures, Norma and Louise develop a close bond. Norma discovers that there is more to life than conformity and society's expectations, while Louise begins to understand the importance of family and connections. The Chaperone is a heartwarming story that tackles themes of identity, acceptance, and the power of female friendship.
