The Cave of the Yellow Dog is a 2005 Mongolian drama film, written and directed by Byambasuren Davaa. The film tells the story of a young nomad girl named Nansal, who lives with her family in a traditional felt tent on the Mongolian steppes. One day, while out herding sheep, Nansal comes across a stray dog and brings it back to her family's camp. Against the protests of her parents, Nansal decides to adopt the dog and names him Zochor.

As Nansal and Zochor grow closer, she starts to look for ways to convince her parents that he is harmless and not a threat to their livestock. She even tries to teach Zochor how to herd sheep, but her efforts are met with resistance from her family. Meanwhile, her father is considering selling their herd and moving to the city, where he believes he can find better opportunities for his family.

Throughout the film, The Cave of the Yellow Dog provides a window into the nomadic way of life and the beauty of the Mongolian landscape. It also explores the tension between traditional values and the pull of modernization. As Nansal struggles to keep Zochor with her family, she is also confronted with the possibility of leaving her home and entering a new world.

The film was shot with non-professional actors and features a naturalistic, documentary-style approach to storytelling. It is a poignant and heartwarming tale of friendship and family that offers a rare glimpse into a culture and way of life that is rapidly disappearing.
