The Campaign

Comedy  United States of America

The Campaign is a 2012 political satire film directed by Jay Roach and starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as the two rival politicians. Ferrell plays Cam Brady, a four-term Democratic congressman who is facing re-election unopposed until wealthy businessmen, the Motch brothers (played by Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow), decide to recruit a naive and eccentric Republican, Marty Huggins (Galifianakis), to run against him.

The Motch brothers hire political strategist Tim Wattley (Dylan McDermott) to help turn Marty into a competitive candidate, including giving him a makeover and coaching him on how to appeal to voters. As the two candidates compete, the election becomes increasingly dirty as they each resort to smear tactics and personal attacks.

Along the way, Cam has an extramarital affair exposed, while Marty's family becomes collateral damage in the campaign. The two candidates engage in a debate that devolves into a physical fight, and in the end, it is revealed that the Motch brothers have been planning to profit from the district's military contracting opportunities if Marty is elected.

Ultimately, Cam wins the election, but he decides to take a stand against the Motch brothers and their corruption, while Marty returns to his old job and his family. The film parodies the dirty tactics and greed often associated with political campaigns and questions the influence of money in politics.
