The Cable Guy is a dark comedy film released in 1996, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Jim Carrey as the titular character, Chip Douglas. The film follows Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick), a newly single man who moves into a new apartment and hires Chip to install his cable. Chip quickly becomes obsessed with Steven and begins inserting himself into every aspect of his life, showing up unexpectedly and even showing up at his workplace.
As Chip's behavior becomes increasingly extreme, Steven tries to distance himself, but Chip becomes increasingly relentless in his pursuit. Chip also begins to cause trouble for Steven's relationship with his new girlfriend, Robin (Leslie Mann). When Steven finally confronts Chip and attempts to end their friendship, Chip reveals his true, sinister nature and begins to stalk Steven.
The film is a commentary on the obsessive nature of modern relationships and the dangers of technology and electronic devices. Carrey's performance as the unstable and unpredictable Chip was a departure from his usual comedic roles and received mixed reviews from critics but has since become a cult classic. The Cable Guy also features a notable cast of comedic actors, including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Janeane Garofalo.
