The Butler, directed by Lee Daniels, is a historical drama film based on the life of Eugene Allen, who served as a White House butler for 34 years under 8 different presidents. The film follows the life of Cecil Gaines, a fictionalized version of Eugene Allen, played by Forest Whitaker.

The film begins with a young Cecil witnessing his father being shot and killed by a white plantation owner in the 1920s. Cecil is then taken in by the plantation owner's mother and taught how to be a house servant. As he grows up, Cecil leaves the plantation and eventually becomes a butler at the White House.

Throughout the film, Cecil serves as a witness to some of the most significant events of the Civil Rights Movement, including the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington. Meanwhile, his son Louis, played by David Oyelowo, becomes increasingly involved in the Civil Rights Movement, leading to tension between the two.

The film also explores Cecil's personal life, including his strained relationship with his wife Gloria, played by Oprah Winfrey. Despite their differences, Gloria becomes involved in the Civil Rights Movement herself and develops a newfound independence.

The Butler received generally positive reviews from critics and was praised for its strong performances, especially by Whitaker and Winfrey. It was also praised for its historical accuracy and depiction of the Civil Rights Movement. The film was a box office success, grossing over $176 million worldwide.
