The Burmese Harp is a 1956 Japanese war film directed by Kon Ichikawa, based on a novel of the same name by Michio Takeyama. The film is set during the final days of World War II in Burma, where a group of Japanese soldiers are fighting against British and Allied forces.

The story revolves around Private Mizushima, a soldier in a Japanese platoon who is skilled at playing the Burmese harp. Mizushima becomes disillusioned with the war when he witnesses the brutal slaughter of innocent Burmese villagers by his own comrades. When he tries to persuade his fellow soldiers to surrender, they reject his pleas.

Determined to find a way to end the fighting, Mizushima adopts the guise of a Buddhist monk and begins wandering the countryside playing his harp as a symbol of peace. Along the way, he encounters various Burmese people, including a group of orphaned children, who help him rediscover his humanity and sense of purpose.

The film is known for its powerful anti-war message and its portrayal of the spiritual and moral transformation of Mizushima. It was highly acclaimed upon its release and has since become a classic of Japanese cinema.
