Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson) is a wealthy and successful businessman who owns a multinational healthcare corporation, while Carter Chambers (played by Morgan Freeman) is a blue-collar mechanic and family man with a passion for history and literature. The two men meet in a hospital room where they are both undergoing treatment for terminal illnesses, and strike up an unlikely friendship.
As they come to terms with their mortality, the two men make a list of things they want to do before they "kick the bucket"–a "bucket list". Despite their different backgrounds and perspectives, they set out to fulfill their dreams together.
