The Redemption of Crocker-Harris

Drama  United Kingdom

The Browning Version is a 1994 film adaptation of a 1948 play by Terence Rattigan. The film stars Albert Finney as Andrew Crocker-Harris, a brilliant classics teacher who is forced to retire due to his failing health. However, his departure from the school is not met with regret but rather with a sense of relief by the school's students and faculty alike. Crocker-Harris is a strict disciplinarian and an uninspiring teacher, known for his dry, dull lectures and his lack of charisma.

Crocker-Harris's personal life is equally bleak as his health and his job prospects. He is estranged from his wife Millie (played by Greta Scacchi), who openly cheats on him with another teacher, Frank Hunter (Matthew Modine). Crocker-Harris is also plagued by a mysterious illness that requires regular injections from a nurse (played by Sarah Badel).

Despite the numerous challenges he faces, Crocker-Harris soldiers on and tries to leave a positive legacy at the school. He pours his heart into marking papers and grading exams, hoping to give his students the best education possible. However, his students remain unappreciative, and even his efforts to give a farewell lecture are cut short by the headmaster.

The turning point in the film comes when one of Crocker-Harris's students, Taplow (played by Ben Silverstone), offers him a copy of the Browning Version, a translation of an ancient Greek play by the poet Robert Browning. The gesture touches Crocker-Harris deeply, and he begins to see that his life's work has not been in vain. The school may not have appreciated him, but his passion for classics has inspired at least one student.

In the end, Crocker-Harris's health takes a serious turn for the worse, and he is rushed to the hospital. Taplow visits him there and confesses that he has been inspired by Crocker-Harris to become a classics teacher himself. Crocker-Harris dies soon after, but he has found some peace in knowing that his legacy lives on. The Browning Version is a poignant reflection on the value of education, the importance of appreciation, and the power of a single act of kindness to transform a life.
