The young French soldier, named Adrien, is haunted by the memory of killing the German soldier and becomes consumed by guilt. He sets out on a journey to Germany to find the family of the man he killed, hoping to find some sort of redemption or closure.
Upon arriving in the small German village, Adrien is met with suspicion and hostility from the townspeople, who are still reeling from the devastation of the war. However, he eventually gains the trust of the dead soldier's family and befriends his fiancée, Anna.
