The Broken Hearts Club follows the lives of a group of young gay friends living in West Hollywood. Patrick (played by Ben Weber) is the central character, a struggling photographer whose romantic life is in chaos. His ex-boyfriend Alex (played by Matt McGrath) is getting married, and his current boyfriend, a waiter named Kevin (played by Andrew Keegan), is not interested in a long-term commitment.
Meanwhile, Patrick's best friend Dennis (played by Timothy Olyphant) is a successful and promiscuous screenwriter who is having trouble reconciling his wild lifestyle with his desire for a more meaningful relationship. Cole (played by Dean Cain) is a handsome and successful doctor who is secretly jealous of his friends' relationships.
When one of their friends dies unexpectedly, the group is forced to confront their own mortality and the fragility of their relationships. New relationships are formed, old ones are rekindled, and the group learns to rely on each other for support and companionship.
