The Breadwinner follows the story of 11-year-old Parvana, who lives with her family in Afghanistan during the rule of the Taliban. After her father is unjustly imprisoned, Parvana is left to take care of her mother, sister, and baby brother. As a result of the Taliban's oppressive laws, Parvana and her mother are not allowed to leave their home without the company of a man.
Despite the challenges she faces, Parvana is determined to help her family survive. She cuts her hair and dresses like a boy in order to disguise herself and goes out into the city to earn money by running errands and reading letters for illiterate people.
Throughout the movie, Parvana learns about the power of storytelling and uses it to escape her harsh reality. She tells her younger brother stories about a brave young boy and a fearless girl who embark on a journey to find a magical land that is full of beauty and happiness.
