The Boy with the Topknot is a British drama film based on the memoir of the same name by journalist Sathnam Sanghera. The film follows Sanghera, played by Sacha Dhawan, as he comes to terms with his identity, cultural heritage and family secrets.
Sanghera, who has been enjoying life in London, begins to feel the pressures of his upbringing and the expectations of his traditional Punjabi family. He decides to confront his parents about his desire to marry outside of their culture, but before he can do so, he uncovers a long-held family secret that shakes his entire world.
As Sanghera comes to terms with this new information about his family, he also begins to take a closer look at his own struggles with his identity and the cultural clash he has experienced throughout his life. With the support of his girlfriend Laura (Joanna Vanderham) and therapist (Anjli Mohindra), Sanghera slowly starts to reconcile his past and embrace his future.
The Boy with the Topknot is a moving and thought-provoking story that explores the complexities of cultural identity and the importance of family, while also addressing issues of mental health and generational trauma.
