The protagonist of the story is a widow named Florence Green, played by Emily Mortimer, who decides to pursue her lifelong dream of opening a bookshop in the small coastal town of Hardborough. Despite facing resistance from the entire town, Florence is aided by a reclusive and mysterious book-loving millionaire, Mr. Brundish, played by Bill Nighy. The two strike up a friendship and bond over their shared love of literature, with Mr. Brundish serving as Florence's only ally in her fight against the town's harsh criticism.

Ultimately, Florence's attempt to introduce literature to the town is thwarted by the local powers that be, leaving her struggling to keep her shop open and her dream alive. The film explores themes of class struggle, gentrification, and the power of literature to bring people together.
