The Book Thief is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Markus Zusak. The movie follows the character of Liesel, a young girl living in Nazi Germany during World War II. After her brother's death, Liesel is sent to live with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Despite their lack of money and resources, Hans and Rosa take in Liesel as their own, and try to give her everything they can.

One day, Liesel discovers a book lying in the snow near her brother's grave. It's a book about grave digging, and even though Liesel can't read yet, she is intrigued by it. Hans takes it upon himself to teach her how to read, using that book as her first lesson.

Liesel becomes obsessed with books, and starts stealing them from wherever she can find them. She shares her stolen books with her neighbors and friends, even reading to a Jewish man named Max Vanderburg, who is hiding in the family's basement.

As the war progresses and the Allied forces start bombing the city, Liesel's world becomes more dangerous and uncertain. But she finds refuge in her books and in the love of her family, who risk their lives to protect each other and the people they care about.

The Book Thief is a poignant, powerful story that explores the themes of love, loss, courage, and the power of literature to inspire hope and resilience in even the darkest of times.
