The Blockhouse

War,Drama  United Kingdom

The Blockhouse is a 1973 war drama film directed by Clive Rees, adapted from the novel of the same name by Jean-Paul Clebert. The film tells the story of a group of French and Eastern European slave labourers who were forced to construct a concrete bunker for the Nazis on the north coast of France during World War II. When the Allied forces invade Normandy on June 6, 1944, the workers are sealed inside the bunker by the retreating Germans, unaware of the outcome of the battle.

At first, the workers, who are all starving and terrified, resort to fighting and fighting over the limited supplies of food and water left behind by the Germans. They also struggle to adapt to living in tight quarters underground, with no daylight or fresh air.

As time goes on, the situation becomes more complicated as illness starts to spread among the group, and they begin to turn on each other out of jealousy and desperation. The lack of candles makes the situation even more dire, as the workers are forced to live in complete darkness.

Despite their dire circumstances, the workers must find a way to survive and escape the bunker before they perish. The Blockhouse is a powerful and harrowing examination of the horrors of war and the human spirit's enduring will to survive.
