The British agent in question is Major John Tarrant (played by Michael Caine), who works for MI6. His son, David, is kidnapped from his boarding school by a ruthless group of criminals who demand that Tarrant steal a cache of diamonds from a Dutch courier in order to secure David's release.
Tarrant initially tries to work through the proper channels of law enforcement and government agencies to get his son back, but he soon discovers that there are corrupt officials working against him from within MI6 and the police force.
Feeling betrayed and abandoned by those he trusted, Tarrant takes matters into his own hands and embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue his son and thwart the criminals' plans. He travels to Amsterdam to intercept the diamond courier and engages in a tense showdown with the kidnappers.
Along the way, Tarrant receives help from a few unlikely allies, including a retired spy played by Donald Pleasence and a beautiful French woman played by Delphine Seyrig.
The Black Windmill was released in 1974 and was directed by Don Siegel, best known for films like Dirty Harry and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The movie was praised for its gritty realism and intense action sequences, as well as Michael Caine's compelling performance as a desperate father willing to do whatever it takes to save his child.
