The Black Arrow is a 1948 adventure film directed by Gordon Douglas and starring Louis Hayward, Janet Blair, and George Macready. It is based on the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson.
In the film, Sir Richard Shelton (Hayward) returns home to England after fighting in the War of the Roses, only to find that his father has been murdered by a man named Sir Daniel Brackley (Macready), who has also seized control of the family estate. Sir Richard initially believes that Brackley was acting on behalf of the Lancastrian army, but soon becomes suspicious of his motives when he discovers that Brackley and his father were old friends.
While trying to determine the truth about his father's death, Sir Richard falls in love with Joanna Sedley (Blair), the ward of his late father. Together, they set out to uncover the conspiracy behind the murder and restore justice to their land.
Their investigation leads them to the camp of the outlaw Ellis Duckworth (played by British stage actor and Shakespearean veteran Edgar Buchanan), who becomes an unlikely ally in their quest for revenge. The film climaxes in a dramatic battle between Sir Richard and Brackley, in which the truth about his father's death is finally revealed.
The Black Arrow received mixed reviews upon its release, with critics praising the performances of the lead actors but criticizing the film's pacing and lack of action. Despite this, it has since gained a cult following among fans of classic adventure films.
