The Birdcatcher follows the story of Esther, a young Jewish girl living in Norway during World War II. When the Nazis invade Norway, Esther is forced to flee with her family to a remote farmhouse in the countryside. However, her family is soon betrayed and captured, leaving Esther as the only survivor.

To stay alive in a country controlled by the enemy, Esther assumes a new identity as a Christian and takes refuge with a group of Resistance fighters. Under the guise of a farm girl, she is trained to blend in with the locals and avoid detection by the Nazi soldiers.
