Charlie Castle is a successful movie actor who has grown disillusioned with the industry. He has been offered a new seven-year contract by his studio, but he refuses to sign it. Castle is thankful for the opportunities he has been given, but he wants to break free from the mediocre films he has been a part of and pursue more meaningful work.
Castle's relationship with his wife Marion is strained, but she supports his decision to leave the studio. She believes that their marriage will be more fulfilling if they can live a simpler life away from Hollywood. Marion and Castle's relationship is complicated by the fact that Castle is having an affair with his co-star, Dixie Evans.
Castle's agent, Nat Danziger, also tries to persuade him to sign the new contract. Danziger believes that the studio's offer is too good to pass up, and that Castle can use his position to push for more creative control over his films. However, Castle is unmoved by Danziger's arguments.
The studio's producer, Stanley Hoff, is infuriated by Castle's refusal to sign the contract. Hoff believes that he has made Castle into a star, and that Castle owes him his loyalty. Hoff decides to turn the screws by threatening to expose Castle's affair with Dixie. Castle is also under pressure from Hoff's enforcer, Smiley Coy, who uses intimidation tactics to get Castle to sign the contract.
As Castle becomes more and more desperate, he realizes that he may have to make choices that compromise his values. He is torn between his desire to stay true to himself and his desire to protect his career and his marriage. The film builds to a tense climax as Castle tries to navigate the treacherous waters of Hollywood politics and personal loyalty.
