The Big Empty is a 2003 American science fiction film, written and directed by Steve Anderson. The film follows struggling actor John Person, played by Jon Favreau, who agrees to deliver a mysterious blue suitcase to a cowboy in a small town in California in exchange for having his credit card debt forgiven.
John sets out on a road trip through the deserted desert landscape of California. When he arrives in Baker, he can't find the cowboy he's supposed to meet. Instead, he discovers a series of bizarre characters, including a strange motel owner, a psychic neighbor, and a mysterious woman named Grace, played by Rachael Leigh Cook.
As John waits for the cowboy to arrive, he begins to lose his grip on reality. He starts to see strange visions and hears unsettling voices. He becomes convinced that the mysterious blue suitcase contains something otherworldly and dangerous.
Meanwhile, John becomes caught in the middle of a violent love triangle between Ruthie, played by Joey Lauren Adams, and her abusive, psychotic boyfriend, Randy, played by Kelsey Grammer. Randy is convinced that John is trying to steal his girlfriend, and he threatens to kill him if he doesn't leave town.
The film's climax takes place at an abandoned hotel, where John finally meets the cowboy and learns the truth about the blue suitcase. The film ends on an ambiguous note, leaving the audience to wonder whether John's experiences are real or if he has simply lost his mind.
