The Big Blue, also known as Le Grand Bleu, is a French-Italian film directed by Luc Besson. It was released in 1988 and stars Jean-Marc Barr as Jacques, Jean Reno as Enzo, and Rosanna Arquette as Johana. The film is loosely based on the lives of real-life free divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca.

The story follows Jacques and Enzo as they compete in various free diving contests around the world, with Enzo always coming out on top. Johana becomes a part of their world when she comes to investigate the death of a diver during one of the competitions. She is initially drawn to Enzo, but eventually falls in love with Jacques.

As the competition heats up, Jacques becomes obsessed with the idea of diving deeper and longer than anyone else. He sets his sights on breaking the world record, even if it means putting his own life at risk. Enzo, meanwhile, struggles with the realization that he may not be as good as he thought he was, and begins to question his own motivations.

The film is known for its stunning underwater cinematography, as well as its exploration of themes such as friendship, love, and the relationship between humans and the natural world. It was a critical and commercial success upon its release, and has since become a cult favorite among fans of both romantic dramas and adventure films.
