"The Best of Enemies" is a 2019 American biographical drama film, directed by Robin Bissell and starring Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, and Babou Ceesay. This movie is based on the true story of Ann Atwater, a civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, a former Ku Klux Klan leader who became a community activist and labor union leader.
The story takes place in Durham, North Carolina, in the summer of 1971, where the school board is grappling with the court-ordered desegregation of schools. Atwater and Ellis are approached by a city council member to co-chair a series of meetings aimed at resolving the issue. Initially, they both resist the idea, but ultimately agree to participate.
As they work together, Atwater and Ellis come to see each other as individuals, rather than as members of opposing groups. Although they begin as enemies, they build a relationship of respect and affection, even as they disagree on the issue of school desegregation.
Throughout the story, the characters are faced with challenges and obstacles, including threats from members of the Klan and opposition from the city council. Despite these setbacks, they persevere, and ultimately, the community reaches a consensus on how to proceed with school integration.
The movie highlights the power of personal connections and the importance of finding common ground in tackling complex social issues.
