The Belly of the Whale is a 2018 Irish dark comedy-drama film directed by Morgan Bushe. The movie follows the story of two down-and-out men, Ronald and Joseph, who are brought together by their shared misfortune. Ronald, played by Pat Shortt, is an alcoholic ex-school teacher who has lost everything, including his family, his job, and his home. Joseph, played by Lewis MacDougall, is a young boy who has run away from home and is living on the streets.
One day, while they are both searching for food in a garbage bin, Ronald discovers a flyer advertising a prize of €25,000 for anyone who can catch a giant fish in the nearby river. The two men come up with a plan to rob the small town's amusement arcade to fund their fishing trip. They enlist the help of a local criminal, Paudi, played by Cian Lavelle, to help them carry out the heist.
The robbery does not go as planned and the three men find themselves trapped inside the arcade with the police outside. As tensions rise, Ronald and Joseph begin to bond over their shared experiences and shared desire for a better life.
