Angela Barrows is a highly ambitious businesswoman who is tasked with the job of investigating the export opportunities of her American employer in Edinburgh. During her journey, she meets Robert MacPherson, a Scottish businessman who runs a traditional clothing company. Robert is struggling to keep his business afloat due to the old-fashioned business practices and the changing market trends.

Robert seeks Angela’s help in modernizing his company and bringing it into the 20th century. However, the staff, led by Mr. Martin, is resistant to change and reluctant to embrace modern ideas. They resent Angela’s presence and see her as a threat to their traditional way of doing things.
